Functional materials impact every area of our lives, from electronic and computing devices to transportation health. Here we examine the relationship between synthetic discoveries scientific breakthroughs that they have enabled. By tracing development some important examples, explore how why were initially synthesized their utility was subsequently recognized. Three common pathways are identified. In a small number cases, such as aluminosilicate zeolite catalyst ZSM-5, an advance is made by using design principles based on earlier work. There also rare cases serendipitous, buckyball Teflon. Most commonly, however, breakthrough repurposes compound already known often out curiosity or for different application.
